I don’t have any hate relationships when it comes to durian. With the exception of hotdogs and sausages, I like to eat anything edible. I’m not very picky. If the food smells like stinky tofu, I would still eat it. Likewise, with durian, I don’t really care if the scent is pungent and musty to my senses. However, I don’t really crave for durian on a daily basis. It’s neither my favorite food nor my nemesis. Durian is my special version of Switzerland.

To Durian lovers, Auntie Sweet makes Durian Tofu. Does that grab your attention?

The moment you step inside Auntie Sweet at Tin Hau, the smell of durian is going to frustrate you. Why does Auntie Sweet smell contradicting? It smells so bad, you wanted to get out, but the excitement of the air and the jam-packed dessert place is making you want to stay?

Durian Tofu

There’s a nuttiness to the taste of durian. Combine it with tofu and the stringiness of the durian meshes well with the taste. It has loads of texture in every bite. Put too much of fresh durian fruit in your spoon of tofu and it becomes intoxicating. Put little on it and you find yourself wanting for more. It’s the epitome of contradictions ~ the adventurous durian marrying with the innocent and humble tofu.

The ultimate Durian Dessert at Auntie Sweet is recommended to be shared with someone else. I don’t think one can finish the whole plate. The technique to the durian fruit is indulging in it little by little, until the flavor grows in you. Durian ice cream? Even better as you scoop it along with a little bit of durian.

Auntie Sweet

Auntie Sweet is like a popular song that everyone will despise at first, but is like the last song syndrome you can’t get enough of.
