Proposition: Oh I love California. And I love burgers. Therefore, I love CaliBurger!
Named by Huffington Post’s as one of the 14 Burger Concepts to watch out for this year, CaliBurger is just one of the many mainstream foreign restaurant chains coming to the Philippines.
CaliBurger: California-Style Burger that’s not based in California
Hailed as the “Doppelganger of the In-N-Out Burger” brand, CaliBurger is an American based corporation with no branches in the United States (yet), that’s rapidly expanding to around 50 restaurant branches across China starting at Dalian. CaliBurger’s first branch was in Shanghai, though not “technically”. With branches in Hong Kong, Shanghai (and coming soon in Los Angeles, Kuwait, Stockholm, London and Washington D.C.), CaliBurger has now arrived here in Manila, Philippines to bring its all out California spirit at its first branch at Century City Mall, Kalayaan Avenue, Makati City. We’re very lucky that CaliBurger has set its eyes here in Manila.
I was simply curious after I dined at Kimukatsu, when Mr. Kenji Komuro tells me that he’ll be opening his second branch at Century City Mall, and here’s the result: CaliBurger Philippines!
CaliBurger Philippines has just opened last February 17th, 2014, so this is really some good stuff you’re reading. You’ve seen this FIRST on Candid Cuisine.
“CaliBurger has made some tweaks to the In-N-Out formula that even some Southern California die-hards might find an improvement on the original.” – LA Times
Now shall we find out if my proposition is correct?
CaliBurger’s ambience is certainly spacious and emits that SoCal (Southern California) beach vibe reminiscent of The Beach Boys. I love its open kitchen and the approachability it exudes from its staff. It clearly screams friendliness that is expected of them. There are outdoor seats available if you feel like it.
CaliBurger’s menu is straightforward. Burgers, fries, milkshakes, bam! But I was hoping for their San Francisco Lemon Chicken Salad and Fisherman’s Wharf Fish Sticks that are available in other countries.
They’ll give you this alarm once your number is called. So sit back, relax and wait for your hamburger… patiently. It’s going to take a while.
CaliBurger’s lean grass-fed beef patty is simply delicious, but a little thin and small, in my opinion. You can choose between raw onions or grilled onions to go with your hamburger. Big eaters can go with a Cali Double burger.
I was expecting more of an American-sized burger. But I guess they have to tone it down for the Asian market. Therefore, I ate two servings. No kidding. The patty was small for me. I guess, next time, I’ll go for the Calidouble.
I liked that I chose grilled onions, knowing I can’t stand raw onions because of its after-effects and that my burger can go without catsup because the sauteed onions were tasty enough and provided flavor. I liked hamburgers that are less salty, so this burger is just fitting for me.
For those who are on a diet, CaliBurger can offer a “low carb style” or “bun-less” option for your hamburgers.
American fries. These are the two words I’d describe CaliBurger’s fries that go with your burgers. Don’t go looking for McDonald’s fries here.
Quick Tip from Candid Cuisine: It’s not on their menu, but ask for the Wild Style Fries, topped with gooey melted cheese. Yum!
Real classic American cheeseburger just the way we liked it. No frills, nothing special.
CaliBurger Chicken Burger
Surprisingly, CaliBurger’s Chicken is grilled. This is definitely the option to go if you’re a weight watcher.
Coming Soon at CaliBurger
There’s more in store for us at CaliBurger. I am looking forward to Chipotle BBQ Chicken, Mushroom Melt Chicken and Ranch Avocado Chicken, more of the gourmet burgers I’d love to try.
Yes, you heard it. CaliBurger is coming to Boracay towards the near-end of 2014. I know they should have opened it in time for the summer but CaliBurger should keep you busy, as CaliBurger Philippines is opening its second branch in the busy area of Timog as a stand alone, two-story store later 5pm! Now that’s flashy news!
The Verdict: Great For To-Go/On the Go, Not for Dine In
Now this is certainly one burger chain you need to watch out for. I love its California, Beach Boys vibe, and its simple, minimalist burgers that are great for a quick bite. Try out CaliBurger Manila and let me know if you liked it!
