Cookie DO NYC: Here’s what you need to know about the latest dessert craze

Cookie Do NYC

The streets of New York are paved with snow. But snow or shine, this is the situation every day at Cookie DO, the latest dessert place to draw powerful crowds.

Curiosity got the better of me, so I braved the snow-sodden streets just to taste this newest craze. Is it cold? Is it going to melt? After all, it’s not ice cream, but why does my mind tell me it is going to melt?

Imagine your mom baking cookies. You steal a bite of that unbaked dough before your mom slaps your hand silly. That’s basically how Kristen Tomlan picked up her inspiration for Cookie Do. Cookie Do initially opened as a mail-order business in 2015 with some promotions with Glamour and Refinery 29, but eventually Tomlan quit her job to pursue her dreams.

After a half an hour wait, my fingers and toes are numb from the bitter cold. (It was 18F, for Chrissakes.) I squeezed myself in the already full dessert bar with snaking lines inside. It turns out my mind was playing tricks on me. Of course, it is cookie dough. Sweet and utterly edible cookie dough.

You have so many flavors to choose from. Go Commando if you want to taste its vanilla form, but it was a toss between the crowd favorite Red Velvet and Heavenly. After all, nobody has ever heard of cookies in red velvet flavor, let alone, cookie dough. I craned my neck every now and then, hearing what people’s choices were. You can try out flavors for yourself if you are not sure. But after that much taste testing, I was pretty much sold for one scoop of Heavenly cookie dough. That’s sugar cookie, Nutella, chocolate chip, caramel bits and sea salt. Talk about diabetes attack.

One scoop costs $4 and two scoops are $7. For the intense sugar tooth, I recommend the two scoop servings. To be honest, I didn’t finish the entire one scoop because after five bites, I was pretty much thirsty. It’s that sweet.

It doesn’t melt. That’s for a fact.

And if there’s something you can learn from Cookie DO, it’s to follow your dreams no matter how crazy it is.
