EAK Ramen, Greenwich Village, NYC

There are literally no signs of Manhattan’s ramen wave slowing down. EAK Ramen in Greenwich Village is one of those Japan-based ramen chains, like Ippudo and Ichiran (in Brooklyn), that are trying to make a dent in the ramen business. And with NYC’s weather during winter, ramen business is always good business.

The EAK – $15

At EAK Ramen, surprisingly, their ramen isn’t that bad for my standards and I like that it was trying to reinvent that traditional Iekei broth, hence EA-Kay. Iekei ramen is always based on both fatty pork, chicken and soy-based ramen that makes it really thick and wild. The EAK Ramen is actually both pork and chicken broth, making it heavier than usual. Keep in mind, I also had ramen for lunch so ramen for dinner in a single day was a challenge.

And because it was that heavy, I felt a slight twinge of headache as I slurped down my ramen.

LA’s branch sells the EAK cheaper at $12.

Zebra Ramen – $16

The Zebra is an even heavier concoction of shio ramen rich with roasted umami garlic oil and you’ve guessed it, butter. Can you handle this?

But of course, the surprise of the evening didn’t really come from its ramen. Lo and behold, the best gyoza I ever ate.

I had to take a video of it so you’ll believe how crunchy its exterior was.
