GHIRARDELLI SQUARE, San Francisco: 82 Years of Chocolatier History

Beyond the SQUARES, luscious chocolate concoctions and ice cream sundaes, the GHIRARDELLI SQUARE at San Francisco is more than just a touristy location, its Lawrence Harprin and William Wurster architectures cannot be missed. As you stroll Pier 39 then Fisherman’s Wharf, towards the end of the Wharf is where you’ll find the Ghirardelli Square, the iconic arch emblazoned its brand that beckons you to have anything that’s sweet.

Back in 1852, Domenico Ghirardelli joined James Lick’s tales of the gold rush, and opened a simple store selling mustard, coffee, spices, chocolate and other confectioneries. It was four stores before today’s location becomes the iconic original Ghirardelli Chocolate Manufactory & Soda Fountain and Ghirardelli Square. Today it’s one of America’s best retailers, setting examples especially in Faneuil Hall Marketplace in Boston and Harborplace in Baltimore, Maryland.

Sneaking a cable car figurine stuffed with SQUARES of different flavors from Dark Cherry Chocolate, Sea Salt Caramel to the classic Milk Chocolate is a natural phenomenon for everyone to do. A friendly Ghirardelli staff will occasionally hand you a SQUARE to taste and invite you to try out more of their merchandise.

While I would love to try out their Hot Fudge Sundaes and indulge with a fake moustache made of whipped cream, a simple cup of Hot Cocoa Chocolate with whipped cream will bring the best Ghirardelli experience for anyone. I think simplicity always delivers and can easily chase away the cold brought about by the San Francisco fog.

When you’re in Fisherman’s Wharf, don’t miss out Ghirardelli Square and be swept away with luscious historical chocolate.
