Gu Ma Ma

If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Causeway Bay, take a long walk towards Tai Hang, the quiet “secret” neighborhood that seems to spawn so many restaurant establishments lately, turning it into the ultimate foodie’s hood. I love that it’s quiet, yet doesn’t become a stranger to tourists. There’s the Hello Kitty Secret Garden Cafe that seems to attract quite a number of bloggers and photographers with its special Apple Cake.

Lab Made attracts many ice cream fans with its special effects on liquid nitrogen techniques.

Unar Coffee beckons the typical coffee connoisseur with its charming and hipster vibe.

Otherwise, if you’re looking for a proper meal, Gu Ma Ma is one of those eateries gaining a steady flow of loyal customers. Opened in 2011 by Jo Kuk Cho-Lam, the actress turned restaurateur who also owns the dessert place Xiao Tian Gu, Gu Ma Ma serves home style Shandong and Shanghai style dishes that isn’t hard to figure out.

Chinese White Cabbage and Pork Dumplings – HKD 48

Pepper and Pork Dumplings – HKD 48

The dumplings are fairly plump and juicy, which tells the story of it being well made. I liked the Chinese White Cabbage and Pork variety best. The Mushroom & Chicken and the Pepper & Pork dumplings doesn’t stand out and tasted ordinary.

Shanghai Style House Pork Ribs – HKD 95

What I probably missed the most in Gu Ma Ma is their Shanghai Style House Pork Ribs. A bite of its juicy ribs with a hint of sweetness made me forget all about Delicious Kitchen’s most popular pork chop.

Gu Ma Ma

Gu Ma Ma won my heart with its crusty exterior and juicy flavor. While a bit tough on some portions, it wasn’t dry.

Gu Ma Ma

The neighborhood of Tai Hang is promising and while Gu Ma Ma’s pork chop is worth trying out for a change, there are more restaurant choices in this quiet district to explore over Gu Ma Ma.
