IZAKAYA YUZUKI, San Francisco
In a neighborhood full of Mexican restaurants, coffee shops and artisanal pizzas, Izakaya Yuzuki appears to be out of place, the lone Japanese restaurant tucked along Guerrero Street. Truth be told, we were hardly craving for Japanese cuisine. But after coming home late from a long drive from Cupertino, Mountain View and Menlo Park, (Yes, we had just gone to visit the Apple, Google and Facebook headquarters!) we were famished, and restaurants in San Francisco actually close quite early. Our only option was to try out Izakaya Yuzuki, the change in palate welcoming after downing several rolls of burrito for the past couple of days.
While my standards for a Japanese restaurant are pretty high coming from Tokyo, I didn’t expect that a Japanese restaurant in San Francisco, let alone a pseudo-Izakaya, would deliver a Japanese experience. Let it be known that America isn’t exactly the best purveyors to excellent Asian cuisine and our Manila Chinese, Singaporean and Vietnamese restaurants fare even better than the US. Still, it’s a reservation to be confirmed after the experience at this elegant eatery.
Daikon Salad – $10
I loved the acidity of the Daikon Salad. It’s a great starter for any meal.
Teba Yakitori – $3.5 per piece
The Yakitori was fairly good, nothing like the sticks at Omoide Yokocho in Shinjuku but I love the crunch of the skin.
Koshihikari Rice with Salmon – $19
I never really expected to wait for more than an hour for this Koshihikari Rice. It was after constant follow ups that this dish was served by their staff dressed in a kimono, our appetites waned and energies needing charging. While they did say it would take 30 minutes to prepare, it was absurd to wait for it for an hour. However, the bowl was indeed comforting to our tummies, the salmon perfectly cooked and the rice fluffy.
Overall, I never really enjoyed my meal at Izakaya Yuzuki, however it would be fitting for those who want to grab a nice sake and chew on some yakitori sticks – all in the heart of San Francisco. Now that sounds weird.
