Katz’s Delicatessen, Lower East Side, NYC

Katz Delicatessen NYC 1

Everybody who has been to NYC knows that famous meaty pastrami on the rye. Since 1888, Katz’s Delicatessen has been serving the best pastrami, corned beef, salami, sausages and all the works in a meat fest that people love about it.

Katz Delicatessen is incredibly old-fashioned. You enter the store and you’re given a ticket that you’re supposed to keep and return when you leave even though you haven’t ordered anything. But why visit Katz without trying their meat?

Pastrami on the Rye – $19.95 + tax

While old-fashioned, more than 5 friendly sandwich makers line up the counter, and that’s where you order. I got the classic Pastrami on the Rye ($19.95), which is a little steep in price by NYC standards, but the high stack of thin slices of pastrami make up for it. I literally cannot finish one sandwich in one sitting. They give you a plate of pastrami slice to taste, just so you know what you’re getting. Just a bite of the pastrami made my mouth water in anticipation.

Lined with mustard, the Pastrami on the Rye is a great sandwich. Perhaps, it is not the best sandwich I ever had (even with pickles and cucumber on the side), but it’s a part of NYC tradition. The city wouldn’t be complete without Katz Delicatessen, and to visit it is to recognize one of the meat institutions that have made NYC it is today.

It’s nice to meat you, Katz Deli. Until we meat again.
