KO HYANG TOFU HOUSE Korean Restaurant, San Gabriel, California

If you’re planning for a trip to Los Angeles, Koreatown should always make into your list. Two decades later, the community rarely looks like it has been burned down. There are malls, shopping centers, and most of all, Korean restaurants, that keep this highly graphic city alive. It’s like a little town of Seoul that’s lined up with Galbi and Tofu House culture that no possible state can compete.

It is without a doubt that the Soondubu Jigae dish emerges from the city of Los Angeles, which according to US Census Bureau, has the most number of Korean American residents in the country. A trip to Los Angeles wouldn’t be complete without uncovering the history of the legendary Soondubu Jigae, the only dish whose roots did not originate from South Korea, but reinvented to tailor the Korean immigrants’ new lives in Los Angeles. Today, we all enjoy Soondubu Jigae not only in Los Angeles but in various parts of the globe.

Before anything else, admittedly, I am not a huge fan of Korean cuisine, except Soondubu Jigae, the primary reason being my love for both spicy foods and tofu any way it is cooked. You should head over to Koreatown to experience Beverly Soon Tofu Restaurant near Wilshire Boulevard, but if you’re too hungry and the drive is too long, Ko Hyang Tofu House at San Gabriel, California, may be just the right pitstop for your trip to Los Angeles.

Banchan is served traditionally at Ko Hyang Tofu House, with a mixture of seafood pancake, kimchi, beansprouts and sweet potato bites.

Soondubu Combinations are the primary highlight at Ko Hyang Tofu House, with Galbi combinations ranging from $12 to $14. Serving size is incredibly generous and two people can share a single combination.

Galbi Combo – $13.95

The beef short ribs is quite good. Each combo has a pot of white rice to go along with it. You can choose what kind of stew, whether tofu, seafood, or beef, and the intensity of spiciness in the broth. Medium spiciness wasn’t enough for me, but welcoming to the cool winter.

Fish Croaker Combo – $14.95

For a change, we got the fish croaker combination, which is like mackerel except there’s more fish meat in it. I’m not a fan of this fish though. It tastes eerily like the usual milkfish tilapia.

What I love about this place is that they have huge servings. I prefer their chicken over the beef short ribs and the fish croaker.

If you’re not in the mood for yakiniku, which is more common in Koreatown, and parking spots are hard to secure, Ko Hyang is good alternative for those looking for a quick Soondubu fix.
