LUNG HIN at Marco Polo Hotel Ortigas Manila

Lung Hin Marco Polo Ortigas Manila

At Marco Polo Hotel, there is the Cafe Pronto, Cucina, VU’s and Lung Hin experience, the latter aspiring to make an impression among diners always on the lookout for contemporary Chinese cuisine. The combination of 22 years of Chef Cheng Yeung Kwan’s Cantonese expertise and resident Dim Sum Chef Ka Ming Pun’s equal competencies in Hong Kong’s Michelin Star Yung Kee restaurant is not to be taken lightly. There is a familiarity of dimsum dishes that’s a given plus the flare of Cantonese dishes that has the potential to bump off the #1 go-to Chinese restaurant in your list.

My first experience at Lung Hin is with the company of my second family at work. If your search for the perfect restaurant to spend Christmas dinner with your family has gone dry, consider putting Lung Hin in your list, and take note of the signature dishes to order.

Steamed Shrimp Dumpling (Hargao) – P220

Lung Hin Marco Polo Ortigas Manila

Lung Hin is rather famous for its steamed shrimp dumpling or Hargao as we call it. It’s plump outer covering is topped with gold speckles – real gold, to be exact. While the gold doesn’t contribute to the taste, everyone’s favorite dimsum dish is not to be missed at Lung Hin.

Steamed Barbecue Pork Bun – P220

Lung Hin Marco Polo Ortigas Manila

Pork Buns are now a staple in every dimsum experience, but Lung Hin’s version falls flat compared to Choi Garden, Tim Ho Wan and Tuan Tuan, smaller, less sweet and a little hollow.

Steamed Pork Siomai – P220

I liked Summer Palace’s siomai better than Lung Hin’s. I think that’s got to be the Chinese restaurant with the best siomai in the city, and so far no one has been at par to Summer Palace yet.

Stir Fried Squid with Mashed Salted Eggs and Seasoning – P380

Lung Hin Marco Polo Ortigas Manila

Lung Hin’s signature Stir Fried Squid with Mashed Salted Eggs is not to be missed. The mashed salted eggs exterior has that distinct rough texture that everyone loves – a stellar appetizer that is also Lung Hin’s bestselling dish.

Braised Mixed Vegetable with Bamboo Pith – P400

I love mushrooms and bamboo shoots so it might come across as biased, but this is one vegetable dish that can be a favorite for the oldies.

Sweet and Sour Pork in Blueberry Sauce – P380

Lung Hin Marco Polo Ortigas Manila

I have always been a fan of Choi Garden’s sweet and sour pork, as it is delicately drizzled with sauce and the pork retains its crunchy texture. While Lung Hin doesn’t have that, the blueberry sauce is a twist to everyone’s favorite Chinese dish. I find it too sweet, but nevertheless the meat is tender.

Roast Peking Duck Two Ways 北京 – P3600

Lung Hin’s Roast Peking Duck is done two ways – the Peking Duck wrap plus Minced Duck in Lettuce cups. The skin is not that crispy, but passable in taste.

I find the minced duck in lettuce better and is one of my must-order dishes out of the lot.

Three Flavoured Prawns – P1280

Lung Hin Marco Polo Ortigas Manila

One word: Stellar. If there is one dish that’s memorable, it’s Lung Hin’s Three Flavored Prawns, comprising of Salted Egg, Blueberry and Japanese Ginger flavors. I loved the large, succulent prawns with interesting flavors that cut through the shrimp’s meat. It’s like eating the shrimp salad minus the bells and whistles of fruit cocktail.

Lotus Rice

Lung Hin Marco Polo Ortigas Manila

In an authentic Cantonese style cooking, this fragrant lotus rice is reminiscent of Hong Kong’s bustling humble restaurants. Choose this over the traditional Yang Chow fried rice.

‡ƒ‡†Steamed King Garoupa in Light Soy Sauce – Seasonal Per Gram

Lung Hin Marco Polo Ortigas Manila

If steamed Lapu-Lapu is always a staple in Chinese restaurants, then Lung Hin’s Garoupa won’t disappoint you. There’s the Truffle sauce variation, but that’s a bit overrated.

Sauteed Diced Beef with Foie Gras in Golden Nest – P680

Lung Hin Marco Polo Ortigas Manila

Finally, Lung Hin’s diced beef will take a back seat versus the goose liver or foie gras. One might think it should have been named “Sauteed Foie Gras with Diced Beef in Golden Nest”.

Service was good on several occasions since this is a restaurant by a hotel group, but there are a few misses in service, especially with the order of dishes that came out. The Peking Duck came out first over the Squid which should have been the appetizer, and I think that might be the reason that the Peking Duck’s skin wasn’t crispy. Still the dragon scales surrounding the restaurant is a pleasant compromise to service mishaps.

If you’re tired of the usual defaults like Gloria Maris and Century Seafood Restaurant, this “Dragon Pavillion” deserves to be in your list of Chinese restaurants for special gatherings. The trio of Salted Egg Squid, Three Flavored Shrimps and the Minced Duck are interesting enough for me to return to Lung Hin, and I am curious to try out the Crab Claw that’s speckled with gold as well. There are also private function rooms which should come in handy especially during Mooncake Festival. Those who are near the area of Ortigas will find Lung Hin’s location extremely convenient, especially with the thought of traversing Edsa just to reach Choi Garden slightly discouraging.
