MAMA LOUs ITALIAN KITCHEN, UP Town Center

Back in 2013, UP Town Center was just a small facade filled with promising brand new restaurants with the likes of Cafe Shibuya, Tokyo Tonteki, Shrimp Bucket and Lucca Bakery. Today, UP Town Center is a mammoth and I still can’t believe they’re constructing another building adjacent to it. While many of the establishments are still closed (Hint: Ramen Nagi!), there are a few that expand the choices of students and curious foodies alike – one of which, MAMA LOUs ITALIAN KITCHEN.

Mama Lou’s Italian Kitchen is Richard Tremblay’s successful story that spun out of its humble beginnings at Las Pinas. From an old house to a homey restaurant, it’s one of the most popular restaurants from the South of Luzon and featured as one of the Best Restaurants in 2014 by Philippine Tatler Dining. I am really thrilled that they opened at UP Town Center since a drive to Las Pinas is just time consuming.

If Japanese cuisine didn’t exist, Italian cuisine must have been my favorite cuisine. I cannot live without pasta. I would choose pasta noodles over rice in a heartbeat. Give me some creamy lasagna and I am a happy camper. The way to my heart is through pasta.

Truffle Mac and Cheese – P285

Who doesn’t love Mac and Cheese, and one that’s a comforting blend of truffle cream and cheese? I love, love, love Mama Lous Truffle Mac and Cheese, something that I prefer over Kettle‘s Mac and Cheese that uses elbow macaroni as well. The aroma might be too strong so if you’re dining with kids, best to proceed with caution as some kids don’t like truffle smell.

Lasagna – P295

Mama Lous Lasagna is so creamy, you won’t be able to finish the whole thing on your own! At Mama Lous, it’s best to share with a friend or two to taste a little bit of everything. It wasn’t the best Lasagna I ever tasted, but it’s certainly one I’d go back for if I need some carbo loading.

Spaghetti with Meatballs – P295

I’m extremely sensitive when it comes to Spaghetti with Tomato Sauce. I dislike those that taste too sweet like kiddie spaghetti or those that are served for birthday parties. I’m glad Mama Lous didn’t disappoint me. I love the springy al dente spaghetti that goes along with their chunky fresh tomato sauce. The serving size was enough for 2-3 people. If you loved meatballs, Mama Lous meatballs certainly hit the spot with the pure beef taste and texture that goes along with their spaghetti.

Half & Half – Mama Lous Special (P450) & All Meat Pizza (P450)

Like pasta, I am very particular when it comes to pizza. I’m not a fan of thin crust pizza because these remind me of my bad experiences at Greenwich (God I hate that brand.) and I thoroughly hate thin crust pizza. Don’t give me thin crust pizza because I won’t eat it even though I’m hungry!

But I’m glad Mama Lous doesn’t serve the kind of thin crust pizza I don’t like. It’s not too thin, and having them serve arugula and alfalfa sprouts kind of made it a half-panizza kind of pizza.

We chose Mama Lou’s Special and the All Meat Pizza since you can choose to combine two flavors if you can’t seem to decide. There’s a unique taste to the Mama Lou’s Special. The bitterness of the arugula marries with the mango slice sitting on top of prosciutto, mozzarella and tomato. Add to that balsamic reduction drizzled on top of the pizza and it’s one unique pizza for me.

For meat lovers, Mama Lous All Meat Pizza’s bacon is bound to make you want for more. I normally don’t eat pizza that has too much meat because the taste of real mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce gets overpowered (and what can you guess, I’m a huge fan of just plain cheese or Margherita pizza!), but Mama Lous All Meat pizza isn’t a bad idea.

Mama Lou’s Iced Tea – P75

This one is a good thirst quencher, by the way. And almost everyone recommends drinking their iced tea!

The place feels like home, especially with Mama Lou’s picture hanging by the wall to watch over you as you enjoy their food. It isn’t the best Italian restaurant out there. I’m still missing New York’s Grimaldi’s Pizzeria and Trattoria Reggiano in Vegas, but Mama Lous fill up that void in me that craves for something Italian, one more alternative restaurant for me to regularly visit. While we didn’t get any antipasto and entrees, I would love to come back and try out their poutine when I have some extra calories to spare.
