NIKO NIKO SUSHI, Western-Style Makizushi Rolls in California

There’s no better place to taste the real California Rolls than in California. And not just any California Rolls. These are the thick, fat, huge servings of rolls that have a fusion of baked flavors that is Western-style in the world of sushi. Forget the origins and purist nature of enjoying sushi, omakase style. Welcome to California, where those rules are virtually non-existent. California Rolls exist for the purpose of making your belly happy and contented. Where to get the best rolls in the city of angels? Readers, meet Niko Niko Sushi (and my obsession with it).

Niko Niko Sushi

I love, love, love Niko Niko Sushi’s creative executions of the western-style sushi rolls. When presented with their menu, you’ll find yourself in crossroads. Which roll speaks to you the most? It’s as if I was back at The Cheesecake Factory, except this is sushi. I want to enjoy indulging in these rolls that I thought I would be able to finish. But at Niko Niko Sushi, you’ll need a friend or two to help you finish its huge serving.

Niko Niko Sushi has daily promos such as half a maki and costs half the price, but I wouldn’t recommend this since the full serving has less scrimping in ingredients. Besides, you should bask in the glory of these shiny, baked rolls.

Beware. There’s some serious foodporn that’s about to greet you.

Snow Cone Roll – $13

Niko Niko Sushi

Baked Albacore Lobster, Crab Meat and Avocado. This is so rich because of the Avocado. It’s like eating burrito with guacamole the other way around with rice on the outside and coated with baked lobster, drizzled with Teriyaki Sauce.

Spicy Pork Roll – $12

Niko Niko Sushi

On the other hand, I’m not too fond of the Spicy Pork Roll. You have California Rolls topped with Barbeque Pork and Salad, which is kind of eating a pork rice topping.

The Firecracker Salad – $12

Niko Niko Sushi

This is such a refreshing, citrusy salad. There’s crabsticks, avocadoes and Mexican mangoes which is just the most interesting mango fruit I’ve had so far. I love the clean taste of this salad, and is a good complement to the heavy rolls we ordered.

The Hungry Roll – $14

Niko Niko Sushi

If you must order one roll, get Niko Niko Sushi’s most popular baked roll – the Hungry Roll. That’s made up of Eel, Crab Meat, Avocadoes (again), Cucumber, Salmon, and Shrimp Tempura plus tempura shavings on top, glazed with Niko Niko Sushi’s Special Sauce. Every seafood you’ve always dreamt of eating is packed in this best valued roll at Niko Niko Sushi. Two thumbs up!

Volcano Roll – $12

Niko Niko Sushi

Torch Restaurant in Manila’s Volcano Roll —- that’s how you call a Volcano Roll?! Spicy Tuna, Avocado, Crabmeat and Baked Scallop. This is one helluva roll and my vote goes to Niko Niko Sushi’s Volcano Roll. Torch Restaurant’s Volcano Roll looks feeble compared to this masterpiece.

Now THIS will explode in your mouth, that Torch only did with a flicker. Pfft.

Monkey Brain Roll – $12

Niko Niko Sushi

With its Spicy Tuna, Salmon atop the California Roll and special sauce, everyone went bananas over the Monkey Brain Roll. I loved its taste and how it does look like a monkey’s brain. It makes me want to save the dollop of Salmon for last bite.

Soft Shell Crab – $12

Niko Niko Sushi

It’s a bit expensive for a malnourished soft shell crab, so I believe it’s better to grab Fried Soft Shell Crabs in local Chinese restaurants where the crabs are better fed.

Green Tea Ice Cream

Niko Niko Sushi

Sometimes, Niko Niko Sushi’s staff are so nice to you that they’ll give you a scoop of green tea ice cream to wash those creamy tastebuds.

It’s a big, big sin not to visit Niko Niko Sushi when in Los Angeles. They have stores all over Los Angeles too so it’s not hard to locate. I highly recommend you to try out at least the Hungry Roll and experience California Rolls in the heart of California.
