The NYC bar rundown

gatsby's nyc

Hey folks, I am now doing a rundown of NYC bars, maybe weekly, depending on how many I visit. I know how much you need a place to chill, go crazy, go emo, or just have fun. You’ll see this list grow as time passes, so check it every now and then!

Sweet & Vicious, Nolita

Location: 5 Spring St, New York, NY 10012, USA
Opening Hours: 2:00pm – 4:00am Daily
Telephone Number: +1 212-334-7915
Official Website: www.sweetandviciousnyc.com

Sweet & Vicious seems to be popular because of their margaritas, but you can get anything from the Brooklyn Lager to the city’s staple Moscow Mule. Make sure to stick around at 10:00pm while listening to their 90’s throwback and hip hop classics, and watch the bar transform into a jam-packed place-to-be in NYC.

Sly Fox, East Village

Location: 140 2nd Ave, New York, NY 10003, USA
Opening Hours: Friday & Saturday 6:00pm – 4:00am, Monday to Thursday 6:00pm – 2:00am
Telephone Number: +1 212-614-3283

It’s probably the cheapest PBR + shot you can find in East Village, but I could be wrong. For 4 bucks, don’t complain about the rough whisky and beer on tap, but you’ll find that this hidden gem sitting beside a Ukrainian restaurant hits all sorts of sly. A secret: enter by that restaurant if you’re under 21 and you can get inside Sly Fox through the back entrance.

Botanica Bar, SoHo

Location: 47 E Houston St, New York, NY 10012, USA
Opening Hours: Monday to Friday 5:00pm – 4:00am, Saturday and Sunday 6:00pm – 4:00am
Telephone Number: +1 212-343-7251

If you want somewhere to chill and talk (and hear yourselves), Botanica Bar is the low key hangout to be. Cocktails sell for $6 to $8, a price range slightly better than $14 places.

Union Hall, Park Slope

Location: 702 Union St, Brooklyn, NY 11215, United States
Opening Hours: Monday to Friday 4:00pm – 4:00am, Saturday & Sunday 1:00pm – 4:00am
Telephone Number: +1 718-638-4400

Union Hall NYC

If you want something different in NYC nightlife, use a Floo powder and transport yourself to a Hogwarts-like bar at Union Hall. The place is decorated like a prim and proper frat house with library decor. But every now and then, this Brooklyn watering hole holds Comedy Festivals and Friday Night Jamz at its basement. Oh and play a game of Bocce and be on the leaderboard.

Amelie, Greenwich Village

Location: 22 W 8th St, New York, NY 10011, USA
Opening Hours: Monday 5:00pm – 12:00am, Tuesday to Thursday 11:30am – 12:00am, Friday & Saturday 11:30am – 2:00am, Sunday 11:00am – 12:00am
Telephone Number: +1 212-533-2962
Official Website: ameliewinebar.com

In it for happy hour? Bars in NYC usually have their happy hours between 5:00pm – 7:00pm, and Amelie’s unique trio of wine sampling for only $12 is AMAZING. Get a glass of Rosé, Dry Oak Sauvignon and a sparkling to complement your dinner, or just simply the Olivier to sample the best of Rosé’s from South Africa and Provence. This San Francisco-born bar hits high at 4.5/5 on Yelp with their superb customer service. This bar is Candid Cuisine’s pick of the week.

Oh and if you have Swarm, check-in at Amelie and get a $5 gift certificate perk!

Gatsby’s, Soho

Location: 53 Spring St, New York, NY 10012, USA
Opening Hours: Daily 11:00am – 4:00am
Official Website: www.gatsbysnyc.com
Telephone Number: +1 212-334-4430

gatsby's nyc

Like the Great Gatsby, with its bright red facade, but super low key inside, it’s just any other chill pub to grab a bite and a drink or two. It’s probably the perfect place to watch a game.

169 Bar, East Broadway

Location: 169 E Broadway, New York, NY 10002
Opening Hours: Daily 12:00pm – 4:00am
Telephone Number: (646) 833-7199

Pretentious and sleazy. This cheap Nola-themed dive bar tops my list of the worst bars I’ve ever been to. Hurricane drink tastes so bad, you just want to get it over with.

Metropolitan Bar, Williamsburg, Brooklyn

Location: 559 Lorimer St, Brooklyn, NY 11211
Opening Hours: Daily 3:00pm – 4:00am
Telephone Number: (718) 599-4444

While a gay bar, Metropolitan Bar is one of the most welcoming bars I’ve visited. The atmosphere is friendly, no such thing as an outsider, and you don’t get hit on 5 times. Just a place you can have some fun.
