I am not much of a macaron lover, but sometimes, my sweet tooth yearns for something delicate, beautiful and delicious at the same time, to cap a salty, MSG-filled meal in the heart of Hong Kong. Welcome Paul Lafayet to my stomach.

Hong Kong is home to many famous macarons, including TWG, Laduree Paris and Pierre Herme. While each has its own craft and artisanal values they take pride for, I believe all these macarons taste alike. Yes, I shall stick to my stubborn mindset. Admit to yourself that whatever the brand may be, all macarons taste alike.

Paul Lafayet, on the other hand, is classic French takeaway desserts, minus all the charms of a sit down tea set that dainty people want to dine in. With that, you can get a piece of macaron for only HKD 18. At Laduree, each Macaron is priced at HKD23. Yes, you paid HKD 5 to sit down, when you can just gobble a macaron while standing. Just kidding, of course.

I got myself a gift box with the following flavors: Rose, Baileys, Seasalt Caramel Mocha, Lychee, Cappuccino and Pistacchio. I like Rose and Baileys best. They are all too sweet and each was a smack in the middle of heaven. Cappuccino was very coffee-flavored. I can only eat two at most ~ more than that, and my teeth will have a trip to the dentist.

Sometimes, my thoughts really send loud signals to the entire Universe. It was so loud, my stomach and tastebuds had to echo whatever I was craving for.

After buying a box of Paul Lafayet macarons, I came back to the hotel, stumbling upon a gift from the Managing Director of Park Lane Hotel.

Behold, it was filled with macarons.

So much for paying HKD 120 for a box of Paul Lafayet macarons.

And to prove that all macarons taste alike? I couldn’t distinguish Paul Lafayet from The Cake Shop’s macarons, though some would say, free food always tastes better. Or perhaps it was my lack of understanding in the wealth of macaron-making. Perhaps, I need to find the best Macarons that exists. Nevertheless, both brands satisfied my cravings for something sweet. The Cake Shop’s macarons were smaller though.

Thank you Park Lane Hotel. I had to go on a bender night with your George & Co. gift certificates.
