I can’t remember how long I’ve wanted to eat at RUB RIBS & BBQ at Scout Rallos, but I can’t seem to find the people who want to go there with me to eat. For one, some say the restaurant was too cramped, or the service sucked and the food wasn’t really worth the dime. I’m the kind of person who would still be willing to shell out the money even though some of my peers were discouraging me simply because I wanted to try it out for myself. Experiences can be very subjective and it varies per visit.
I wouldn’t want to eat at RUB Ribs & BBQ alone because it was the type of restaurant you’d best enjoy with a couple of your friends, not that I didn’t want to be on my own.
I’m glad my friends and I found the time beyond our busy schedule to eat at Rub Ribs & BBQ. (It’s funny because we were about to eat at Besty’s Restaurant at Scout Bayoran who was serving Barbeque Ribs too, but it was beside a slum area and they had the door locked! It was scary dark inside and looked like the place was about to close anytime.)
Surprisingly, RUB Ribs & BBQ ranks #13 out of 1098 restaurants in Quezon City at TripAdvisor. Owners Monica Kabigting and her husband targets families with kids who’re looking for comfort food at affordable prices. What’s amazing is that Monica Kabigting is also the Mobile Data Services Head for Globe Telecom. Talk about a super woman who juggles between being a restaurateur and a telco executive! Her husband, Martin, perfected his dry rubbing process that is the heart of RUB Ribs & BBQ.
RUB Ribs & BBQ is familiarly American in nature, with posters of famous artists like The Beetles.
It’s best if you come early at RUB Ribs & BBQ because if it’s at peak lunch hours, you’ll find it hard to find an available table. A couple of years ago, this very first branch of Rub Ribs & BBQ at Scout Rallos, Tomas Morato was just a trial hub for their dishes. The space is cramped and a little shabby – which I loved, by the way, because it tells a lot about how serious they are in their business despite the small space. It’s a matter of preference. They immediately sparked to fame after opening at Kapitolyo, Pasig where it’s a foodie’s paradise.
We all got the Single Raki’s BBQ Ribs where you’ll get a plain rice and 1 side dish. They have loads of side dishes to choose: Texas Toast, Grilled Buttered Corn, Garlic Spinach and Mushrooms, Roasted Garlic Mash Potato, Bacon and Potato Salad, Coleslaw, Buttered Vegetables and Sprice or Spiced Fried Rice. You can also order Bacon Mac and Cheese, Creamed Spinach or Creamed Corn to go along with your rack of ribs, but you’ll have to add P75.
I got myself Garlic Spinach and Mushrooms and Grilled Buttered Corn, which I had to add an additional P30 to remove the white rice. I love the combination. There’s a balance of Ribs and “healthy” vegetables drowning in butter that’s unmistakable.
My other friends got Sprice, Mash Potatoes and the Grilled Buttered Corn, which is the most popular side dish at RUB Ribs. I found the Mash Potatoes a bit dry in texture. And the Sprice wasn’t that appealing compared to Senor Pollo‘s.
But the Ribs? Heavenly. It wasn’t literally fall off the bone and super tender, but the flavor was just about right. There wasn’t a hint of smokiness on the ribs unlike the ones in the US, but I didn’t get bored eating it either. I appreciated the small amount of fat in it that’s embedded in every single bite. I preferred this ribs over Casa Verde since it wasn’t dry.
For those with a monstrous appetite, they have the Super Duo (which sounds eerily like Globe’s mobile plan) that is a full slab with 2 sides and the Family Brunch that is good for four people and is accompanied with three sides. (I was really tempted to get the Family Brunch for myself. 😛 )
I’d like to try out their Shrimp and Cilantro Pasta, Beef Ribs, Fish and Chips, Bacon Potato Soup … the list seemed endless! My friend gushed about Fried Oreos with Vanilla ice cream. Tempting! But maybe on my next visit.
Service wasn’t exactly second-to-none but it’s what to be expected once the restaurant has been there for quite some time.
There are a couple of restaurants that stood out in my list as “default” restaurants to eat, like Mu Noodle Bar and Chilis because they continually serve great dishes with awesome customer service and I don’t get tired of eating it. Seems like RUB Ribs is “almost” there in my list.
RUB Ribs & BBQ is about to open a new branch at Roces Avenue, Quezon City, where Chocolate Kiss was before it closed.
