It’s known in the food blogging world that restaurants branded after celebrity chefs must be tread with caution. True enough, most of them are tourist traps, with customers end up paying for the brand and prestige of the restaurant over the quality of dishes. In a city where there seems to be no mistakes in the culinary space and where the most number of Michelin stars thrive, is there such thing as a tourist trap?

We take a look at Wolfgang Puck Express, whose Downtown Disney store is highly criticized for its price points over quality of dishes, and its establishment meant to give a classier, upscale feel for locals in the area. At Harajuku, Wolfgang Puck Express’ TripAdvisor rating ranks higher than its predecessor.

A fair waiting time meets you if you come unprepared, but the expressions on the faces of mostly students in Tokyo paint a serious case of gastronomic heaven. They seem to be enjoying their bowl of pasta.

For tourists, Wolfgang Puck Express is one place to cross from their bucket list.

With Wild Cub’s Thunder Clatter at the background and chatters here and there, the restaurant is livelier than the first time I set foot inside the restaurant. Wolfgang Puck is one of the many establishments thriving at the uber crowded Takeshita Dori. Wolfgang Puck Express here at Harajuku seem to have a world of its own, away from the notions of a celebrity chef restaurant.

Bolognese Pasta – 940 yen

Indeed, Japan’s excellent quality of flour pays off. Wolfgang Puck’s Pasta Bolognese is dainty and springy, with just the right amount of tomato sauce that doesn’t come across as too sour. It’s easily one of the best pasta dishes I have tried.

Margherita Pizza – 1320 yen

Likewise, its Margherita Pizza sizzles with a soupy center that’s Neapolitan-like, perfect for folding the pizza in half. The resulting dough is kneaded well, with the right degree of roast to the crust giving it a good burnt in taste.

Hamburg and Fried Chicken Plate with Salad and Rice – 980 yen

On another hand, I was really disappointed with their Hamburg and Fried Chicken Plate with Salad and Rice. But I never really did like all things Hamburg. It tastes weird with rice.

I’m convinced that the city of Tokyo is immune to culinary fault lines. One restaurant has to shake up the whole “Everything in Japan tastes delicious” statement.
