Avatar Experience at the Cloud Forest, Gardens by the Bay was way better than I expected. In comparison, I had been to Disney World’s Pandora The World of Avatar experience in Orlando, Florida. While I enjoyed the latter, it was rather dated and you can see the theme park age a lot compared to the Epcot. That said, the Avatar Experience, created by Disney’s Location Based Experiences, James Cameron and Jon Landau’s Lightstorm Entertainment, was worth going to, especially if you’re a local who hasn’t been to the Cloud Forest in a while… or even for tourists seeing the Cloud Forest and Flower Dome for the first time.
Here are some of the highlights of the experience for those of you who are curious:
Larger than life banshees greet you upon entrance to the Cloud Forest. I thought the entire ecosystem integrated very well with the Avatar world. Reminiscent of the Na’vi at Animal Kingdom, Disney World, IMO.
You can even control the veins powering Na’Vi… and it’s so coincidental they look almost the same in the film. Genius.
One of the main interactive experience is going through the Fire Pod, where you can transcend your consciousness as an avatar. You’ll have your own tail too! I do think the particle VFX were very ILM. You can see a kinect detecting and driving most of your gestures.

The Fire Pod has approximately 20 minute wait, but I reckon the Banshee Flight has a longer wait time. I went there on the first day of the opening, so there was a manageable queue. But the mocap installation (also controlled by kinect) is reminiscent of Dobby back in Warner Bros Studios’ Harry Potter studio tour in Leavesden, UK. Always be in a T-pose (arms straight horizontally, feet together), so that the kinect detects you.
(Yep I have motion capture background and have controlled state of the art mocap systems in my other life lol.)
This gigantic animatronic banshee was so well done. It was one of the highlights of my visit and I wish I can actually take it home haha. I want to keep it as a pet!
But you can grab some exclusive merchandise instead, like your very own Avatar tail, glow in the dark shirts, Jake Sully bear and a really adorable Merlion Avatar. I thought it was super cool and well thought of.
