Kohi Roastery and Coffee Bar is probably the only coffee shop where you can get away without paying anything. This hidden coffee shop located at Crane along Joo Chiat Road (near Peranakan Houses) only accepts gratuity. That’s right; you pay whatever amount you feel they deserved. I thought it was very gimmicky but effective to stir some empathy in you.
What if restaurants do the same? Would the world become a better place? That would be an intriguing experiment.
Anyways, I ordered a white, it’s a small cup, because what do you expect? You’re not expected to pay anything at all! And I was truly surprised; I thought the “we only accept gratuity” line meant I needed to pay tip (something I ran for the hills back when I lived in the US) but took the bait. It is indeed… free of charge.
So I tipped Kohi $5 for my cup of hot white, which I believe is market price for many coffee shops today. Don’t be a cheapo when you stop by Kohi. Leave something for the nice barista!
There’s limited seating near the stand. But probably best to sip your coffee while walking around the Peranakan Houses.
