Loong Fatt Tau Sar Piah, Balestier Road, Singapore
Balestier Road used to be US consul Joseph Balestier’s sugarcane plantation in the 1800s. It also used to be the regional headquarters of Kuomintang and Tongmenghui factions and even Dr. Sun Yat Sen’s villa. Today, it’s a long line of shophouses designed to make your stomach hungry, starting with this Teochew pastry: Tau Sar Piah.
Tau Sar Piah is quintessential pastry for tea breaks in Singapore. Filled with mung bean paste, salty and sweet, these babies fill you up in its flaky, warm, and buttery goodness.
(No doubts about Loong Fatt. This place is a legit institution. I hope they weather the pandemic. Their legacy must survive.)
There are two main flavors at Loong Fatt. Sweet and Salty. Hailed as the “best tau sar piah in Singapore”, going to Loong Fatt isn’t for the faint of heart. The trek from Novena MRT is a long one along Thomson Road, for those who don’t own a car (and even for those who have one, navigating around the construction can be a pain in the ass). That said, brave the long walk because at the end of the road is a box of Tau Sar Piah ready to fill your famished tummies.
I prefer their salty tau sar piah. I’m tasting some bits of salted egg, but maybe that’s my imagination. Dregs from the mid-autumn festival! The flakes are crispy enough to make me want to scrape the bottom of the box, and I usually do that strictly with croissants.
But, be warned, you must pre-order in advance, or the queues can get so long that it’s going to be an utter waste of time to wait. These piahs get sold out quickly with their walk-in customers, so best to plan and pre-order at least 1 week in advance if you don’t want to end up disappointed. They have soft cakes too (which I regret not getting), but if you have a +1 stomach to spare, then get your slices.

When you’re in Loong Fatt, it’d be a sin not to stop by its rival: 603 Tau Sar Piah. Named after its address, this quiet pastry store is better known for its chicken pies. Its tau sar piahs, equally good as well. They sell more flavors aside from the basic Salty and Sweet — cheese, peanut, coffee, sesame, black bean. Again, it might be a good idea to peruse their website before you stop by and again, pre-order in advance.
My personal favorite from 603 Tau Sar Piah? Cheese!
603 Tau Sar Piah also sells glutinous rice (kiampong) and basque cheesecake. The lady was very friendly to offer me some, but I’m saving my stomach for their piahs. I’ll be back for your chicken pies!
Tau Sar Piahs are incredibly cheap, so don’t worry if you over-order.
