@candidcuisine still not quite NYC bagels but better than two men bagel house #sgfoodie #sgfood #sgrestaurant #wheretoeatsg #sgcafe #sgcafehopping ♬ In This House – Marcus Vinicius Alfaro Nascimento
I’m still on the hunt for an NYC-style bagel here in Singapore, or whatever’s the closest to NYC and NJ bagels. After Two Men Bagel House, I swear I didn’t want to grab a bagel here anymore because I don’t even know if they’re selling bagels. But Onalu popped up in my list, and I couldn’t resist trying it out.
The good thing about Onalu is that it does have a build-your-bagels setup, and it’s closer to NYC bagel shops than Two Men Bagel House.
(To be fair, it’s difficult to bring the same bagel recipe here, because NYC and NJ’s tap water from Catskill and Hudson affect the quality of the bagels a lot. They don’t call it the best water in the world for nothing.)
And guess what? They have the everything bagel. *gasp*
Their Charcoal bagel is made with everything, which is quite gimmicky, but it meshed well with the Deviled Spam. At $8, this bagel is packed with deviled eggs, cheddar cheese, and a thiccc spam. This is one mean, devilish bagel.
I wish I added hashbrowns ($2), which has been becoming a force of habit in my sando escapades. (Sando converted me to hashes officially.) But I’m also glad I didn’t, because I was so damn full.
Setting those aside, I wanted to try Onalu again, specifically, the plain everything bagel and have it slathered with cream cheese. The charcoal everything bagel was interesting, but again, this isn’t the NYC bagel that some of you are familiar with. It isn’t crusty, though its softer and denser inside. It’s slightly better than Two Men Bagel House, and it seems this is the best we’ve got for now. While they don’t have the sausage I miss terribly in NYC, the classic BEC or Big Breakfast might just do the trick.
The price points are attractive IMO, primarily because it’s situated inside Singapore Management University (SMU). I think there’s no harm in eating this every now and then. The place is spacious with lots of benches and you can get yourself in the work mode easily with the student community. For a moment, I miss being a student!
