So Good Char Chan Tang Menu (111 Somerset)

Update 2/15/2022 17:04

So I went to So Good Char Chan Tang at 111 Somerset the second time around, ordered the same roast duck and char siew noodles and this time, it wasn’t good. I think the restaurant chef might not be in the mood that day, or they’re just too lazy to cook this time and decided to serve microwaved dishes. The char siew was terribly dry, the roast duck was tough to chew and cold, and they forgot to give me plum sauce. I think I’ll try a different branch the next time. It’s true when they say this place is incredibly inconsistent.

No better way to start this review than saying — So Good Char Chan Tang was so good, at least during my visit there. I heard some inconsistencies, so I was glad I had a great time eating there. The wait wasn’t too long, the queue was orderly, and the food met my expectations. Quite frankly, I wasn’t expecting much from a fast food restaurant serving local HK food fare in Singapore. Of course, it wasn’t going to be the chaa chaan teng we all know when we visit HK. Also, it brought me memories of the cha chaan teng along Mott Street in NYC. I used to hang around there while doing some work.

I loved the noodles with twin combinations. I wish there was trio combination like Legendary Hong Kong! The noodles were springy, and the duck meat was lean, which I loved. The char siew was a bit dry towards the end, but nevertheless, I appreciated the lack of fat in the meat. I’m all for healthy eating if I was going to chomp down an entire french toast by myself.

While there was no peanut butter inside the french toast, as some chaa chan tengs would do, their french toast wasn’t that dry inside. I soaked the french toast in melted butter before diving in it. It was so good, and even better when I dipped it in honey.

The coffee was just alright; again, my expectations were low. I wasn’t in the mood for the milk tea, but I’ll definitely try that out next time.

I would love to go back and try out their condensed milk buns, because I was really disappointed with Tsui Wah here in Singapore.

Be sure to drop by the bakery too. I didn’t find the bread they used for the french toast (damn), but I found the strawberry cheese tarts and napoleons were too tempting to resist.
