During my trek to East Coast Road and Joo Chiat, I discovered a newly opened bakery selling Balkan bread. Yugoslavia Bakery and Cafe has been opened for more than 3 months now. It’s safe to say, being hidden inside Katong V adds to my excitement of discovering something new.
Yugoslavia Bakery and Cafe’s specialty is Burek, a pastry that’s made of phyllo. They have vegetarian ones — feta cheese and spinach — and for the meat lovers, they also have the beef. I got the vegetarian one, because anything with cheese makes me happy.
They also sell sesame bagels or Gevrek, which means “crisp”. I’ll probably try this some other time. It looks like its the perfect bagel for cream cheese. Yum.
They also have Pogacha, which is also focaccia!
And of course, you can’t go to a Balkan bakery without baklavas. I wonder if they’re moist and juicy. It reminded me of my favorite pastry at Toronto’s St. Lawrence Market.
If you’re looking to try out a new bakery, check out Yugoslavia Bakery. It’s located in the first floor of Katong V. You can ride the escalator to the second floor and go down the other side to reach this hidden gem. Or go inside NTUC Fairprice and exit at the back near ATM machines.
