Black Cow 黑牛 at South Beach

Going with the principle “Go high or go low”, I decided to eat at Black Cow, where it’s on the upper limit of middle-range restaurants… I can make exceptions. In fact, it’s too high that it’s bordering on a high range restaurant that’s trying a bit too hard. Some of its dishes places it in quite a conundrum. I couldn’t categorize this restaurant, so I decided to go for its dish that will make or break it: the All in One Premium Don topped with Japanese Wagyu beef.

I didn’t go with the A5 marbling. If they can’t pass through the Japanese Wagyu Beef, then I’m not going to waste my dollars on an A5 whose origins I highly doubted.

Their sets came with salad, miso soup and sorbet for dessert. I found myself leaning towards acidic contrasts to break the tang of the Uni, Foie Gras, Onsen Egg, Caviar, White Truffles and the Japanese Wagyu. It’s all swirling in my tongue until now. I even picked Yuzu sorbet for dessert and the pickled raddish wasn’t enough. The flavors were all too strong.

You can’t really see all the wagyu. It’s buried under the flowers of white truffle. I had to mix half the bowl to get that truffle in deep in flavor. But I’m a bit of a purist, so the other half I chose to munch like a snack. A really expensive snack made of foie gras and uni.

I have mixed feelings about Black Cow. I do want to try out their sukiyaki next time… But I’m afraid it’s going to make me even more nostalgic about Japan. I miss Imahan. Still my go-to sukiyaki place.

Also South Beach is worth a trek.
