FRIENDLYs is a well-known restaurant chain in the East Coast and is best known for its ice cream as a meal, where servings are extremely large for one person and best enjoyed with friends and family. Founded during the height of the Great Depression in 1935 in Springfield, Massachusetts as a simple ice cream shop selling double dip ice cream cones, it has since then strived to survive after its declaration of bankruptcy in 2011.
Friendlys currently has 380 branches across Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, and Virginia.
I had the chance to dine at Friendlys in the quiet town of Watertown, Massachusetts, where Friendlys stood between Arsenal Mall and Watertown Mall. Its quiet facade is a stranger to non-residents and a peek inside the seemingly deserted house would surprise one. It’s packed with people of different ages.
It’s diner interiors has such a homey ambience fit for everyone’s needs. It has a special counter for anyone who might want to grab quick ice cream without having to wait.
Breakfast | Lunch and Dinner | Ice Cream & Desserts
Friendlys serve a wide variety of American and Mexican inspired dishes reminiscent of Chili’s. Unlike IHOP’s all day breakfast concept, Friendly’s breakfast selection can only be ordered for breakfast. Their servings are large and best enjoyed for sharing.
Friendly’s Fish and Chips
Fish and Chips was very satisfactory for me. I like the coleslaw added on the side which made it less routinary in taste.
Friendly’s Chicken Quesadillas
Friendly’s Chicken Quesadillas are packed with cheddar cheese and chicken white meat. I love dipping it in tomato salsa and sour cream. The rice pilaf tastes delicious too especially when you’re extremely hungry. And the tossed greens create refreshes your palate and balances all the fried stuff.
Overall it was a fair experience, and the food was alright but the serving and price points were pretty impressive. The service wasn’t all impeccable and there were a few hit and misses but in the middle of nowhere, Friendlys is a home you can go back again. I’d love to come back again to try out their monstrous and towering desserts that are just plain gluttony.
