GRIMALDI’s PIZZERIA: New York’s #1 Coal Brick-Oven Pizza Institution

Grimaldi's Pizzeria

It doesn’t take long for one to figure out that Grimaldi’s Pizzeria is more than just a pizza empire that has swept America with their 100-years of tradition making coal brick oven pizzas. Grimaldi’s Pizzeria is an award-winning, mindblowing pizza institution that has recipes passed on from generation to generation, making it the classic choice to stop by for anyone in New York.

Grimaldi's Pizzeria

New Yorkers take their pizza seriously ever since Neapolitan immigrant Gennaro Lombardi stepped into their land in 1905. And it isn’t something that is as simple as opening a pizza place right after taking a leaf out of Patsy Lancieri’s restaurant, the latter learning from Gennaro Lombardi himself. Grimaldi’s has stood over the test of time from lawsuits to family feuds.

There would always be the wood-fired Neapolitan style pizza pies at Motorino and Franny’s characterized by their soupy centers, and Di Fara would always be the stopover to have classic Sicilian originated pizza pies. But no one misses Grimaldi’s Pizzeria with their secret dough and special pizza sauce that would make anyone declare this as their must-have pie – Frank Sinatra, Rudy Guiliani, Michelle Obama and Giada de Laurentiis included.

Patsy Grimaldi’s pizzeria at 19 Old Fulton Street is now nowhere near humble, the brand being one of the best pizzerias in New York City. To pass by Grimaldi’s without trying it out would be a crime ~ and the Sin City is no exception to its charisma.

Grimaldi's Pizzeria

I always have a strong penchant for anything that is simple and a glance at Grimaldi’s simple menu won my heart immediately. There were no mind-boggling dishes at Grimaldi’s that would make one have a hard time deciding which to order. Antipasti, pizza and calzones ~ straightforward items on the menu that bring an aura of comfort and casual dining. No frills meant it all boils down to quality ingredients, something I knew Grimaldi’s was nothing short of.

Grimaldi Salad – $8.00

Grimaldi's Pizzeria

There’s nothing that cuts pizza and cheese better than salad, made with olives, cherry tomatoes, and leafy greens tossed with sweet and tangy vinaigrette.

Small Regular Pizza – $16.00

Grimaldi's Pizzeria

Grimaldi’s Pizzeria lets you choose over a variety of toppings from sun-dried tomatoes, to pepperoni, Italian sausage, anchovies, capers and more. Everyone knows, that the pizza is only as good as its crust and the pizza sauce that goes along with it. Grimaldi’s crisp crust is made perfected in 1000F coal-brick oven, something that convection, gas or wood-burning ovens won’t be able to imitate.

Grimaldi's Pizzeria

I declare it one of the best pizza pies I’ve ever had, next to Naples’ Da Michele. There’s nothing more to love than gooey, melting mozzarella cheese as you pull it out of the pizza tray. Add to that the bubbly characteristic of the pie that is unmistakably a result of Uncle Patsy’s perfected flour-throwing technique.

Calzone (Small) – $16.00

Grimaldi's Pizzeria

To cheese lovers, Grimaldi’s ricotta cheese and mozzarella cheese filled Calzone is one of the best there is. Like their pizza, the toppings also applies to their Calzone, which by default already has cheese in it. Stuff it with either the Italian sausage or meatballs to give that meaty texture that fits well with the crust. Grimaldi’s Calzone should be the cherry on top of your Grimaldi experience.

Grimaldi's Pizzeria

Grimaldi’s has come a long, long way since that humble pizzeria at 19 Old Fulton Street. Only Patsy Grimaldi’s coal brick-oven skills and Frank Ciolli’s tenacity can pull off a legend out of it. If Grimaldi’s long line of celebrity and politician clienteles won’t make you try out Grimaldi’s, I don’t know what will.
