When traveling to Osaka, I highly recommend a day trip to Kobe. Kobe surprised me, and I didn’t expect it to look this well-developed. Shops line up narrow roads, and I didn’t feel I was in Japan, save for the name of the shops written in Japanese characters.
Still, I was ecstatic and bitten by the travel bug. If I had more time I would explore Kobe’s hidden personality. But I have one mission in mind – Kobe Beef.
All you need is Kobe. I agree!
Kobe beef is prized for its high quality of marbling coming from the Tajima strain of the Wagyu cattle raised in Japan’s Hyogo prefecture. When eaten, its almost fat-like, tender, and juicy texture rings a chorus of hallelujah at first bite. If you’ve had Kobe beef in the US, or anywhere outside Japan, think again if it’s real Kobe beef, because it’s absolutely illegal to import Kobe beef since 2010. All those burgers made with 50% Kobe beef? That’s one huge lie. While there’s a high probability of the real ones being smuggled, the experience is entirely different when you get to try it in Kobe. And I recommend that you do.
There are many restaurants offering Kobe Beef in Kobe, and one of which is Steakland Kobe. Wakkoqu also offers good quality Kobe beef, but nearly all restaurants have the same taste of Kobe. (There have been bad reviews about the customer service at Steakland Kobe, so if you can’t stand it, you can go elsewhere.)
Steakland Kobe is very easy to spot once you get off Sannomiya Kobe, as it has a long queue outside. You can make a reservation if you’re coming in as a group, but the line fairly moves quickly in case you don’t have a reservation.
Kobe Beef Steak Lunch Set (150 g) – 3180 yen
Steakland Kobe offers set meals, teppanyaki-style, and during lunch, you can get the cheapest Kobe beef set at 150g for only 3180 yen. If you have a larger budget, go for the most premium set you can find!
This good value set meal comes with rice, miso soup, Japanese pickles, salad and a complimentary coffee after your meal.
Everything about the set tastes good. But I love those garlic chips. They drive me crazy!
True enough, the Kobe beef doesn’t disappoint. The rice is hot and fluffy and perfect for the Kobe beef. Dipping it in its garlicky Ponzu sauce creates an explosion of flavors in my mouth.
The plate is slightly tilted so all the oil will ooze out of the beef. I recommend you to put the oil on your rice! 🙂
Kobe beef, you’ve rendered me speechless. Until next time ~ Sayonara Kobe!
