Totto Ramen, Midtown West, NYC

We can credit much of the ramen phenomenon that happened worldwide to New York City. It’s the city that sets the trend for nearly all mega cities to follow. From Hong Kong, to Manila, Singapore, Taipei, and then catapulting a mass pilgrimage of travelers to Japan just to taste the authentic ramen bowl – Thanks a lot New York City. But then, if there’s any city where ramen could be fitting, it’s bitter cold NYC.

People say Totto Ramen one of the best ramenyas in NYC, and not even Ivan Ramen, Momofuku Ramen Bar or Ippudo could actually beat it. But I can’t say Totto Ramen is comparable to Ippudo, because Totto Ramen uses chicken base for its broth. If you have that sensitivity in taste, Tonkotsu Ramen tends to be richer, fattier and makes you bloated in sodium. Chicken ramen, on the other hand, gives you the flexibility to control your ramen. I think that’s where Totto Ramen made the cut – they certainly serve variations of ramen bowls according to your preferences. For those who are just starting, the classic Chicken Paitan is a great introduction to chicken ramen. Step up a notch higher, and get the Spicy Paitan. Then there’s Spicy Nibo Paitan for the adventurous, and the Mega Paitan for the ravenous.

Totto’s Miso Ramen with Corn and Tamago – $14

I opted for the Miso Ramen, less spicy, as I wanted to taste the ramen broth in its pure form without any bells and whistles. Added some corn and tamago in my order (I know, I was aiming for the Sapporo classic miso butter corn ramen!), and I was fixated in this bowl of ramen right in front of me. While it didn’t live up to the Kamakura Osaka standards, Totto Ramen delivers, right by the NYC standards. Surprisingly, their chashu pork was tender, as is the pork snuggled between soft steamed buns.

Great bowl of ramen. Be sure to stop by Totto Ramen in Midtown West. I’ve heard the quality is better than their store in Midtown East, hence longer queues. Just write your name on the list before it opens for lunch or dinner, and go out for a nice happy hour first.
