As I’ve said before, I’m not a huge fan of Taiwanese cuisine. Sometimes I don’t really get satisfied with the variety and depth of flavors in Taiwanese dishes. But whenever I crave for something fried, Taiwanese cuisine does have some of the best salt and pepper dishes.

Monki is one such popular Taiwanese chain that’s sitting in my bucket list for so long. It always has a long line, and the right time to eat at Monki always eludes me.

Side note: In Hong Kong, there is a fashion clothing brand also called Monki. I am not sure if these two are related!

Anyways, what is a Taiwanese cuisine without Oyster Meesua? I find Monki’s rendition thicker than 886 Bistro, and the portion size is generous. For only $9, you get a fill of succulent, plump oysters and a heartwarming soup with a dash of vinegar. I wish that the soup was hotter; it seemed like a dish that was microwaved.

Salt and pepper chicken ($6) is the best partner for the Oyster Meesua. The salt and pepper seasoning fits my cravings well. I would say it has a good balance of small poppers and large chicken meat to satiate your hunger.

I recommend Monki for an everyday lunch, and best to go with a large group so you can try out crowd favorite dishes like their Braised Pork Rice, oyster omelette, and the Taiwanese grass jelly desserts.
