I have few regrets in life, one of which was passing by the best sandwich store in the world at 42nd Street in NYC and not knowing it was Florence’s All’Antico Vinaio. I was damn full from my brunch at Sarabeth’s that I had no room for All’Antico Vinaio.

And I was fuming about this for an entire year.

So imagine my delight when I learned that Milan has All’Antico Vinaio, almost a little too late. We were about to leave the city — it was a quick day trip from Lucerne, I know, a far far three and a half hour drive down South — but I took a chance and ran in the meandering alleys of Milan just to eat the best sandwich in the world.

I arrived with a queue. This queue is nothing to me. In fact, the queue all but lasted for just a mere 30 minutes.

We ordered three sandwiches — Numero Uno, Numero Cinco, and Truffle 1 — all of it tasted absolutely fantastic with their foccacia bread. The sandwiches were HUGE and I recommend splitting them with a friend or two so you get to try more.

Truffle 1 – Mortadella with truffles, soft cheese, mushroom cream, rocket.
Numero 1 – Porchetta, slightly spicy onion cream and roasted potato cream.
Numero 5 – Porchetta, roasted potato cream, parmesan cream.

They were all phenomenal. Love love love the Truffle 1 with its mortadella cheese and that fresh truffles that doesn’t smell artificial and annoying. They use all fresh ingredients, and in the store, you can see them freshly slicing them with the machine.

If you’re ever in Florence, Milan or anywhere there is All’Antico Vinaio, DO NOT SKIP THIS. You won’t regret it.
